Kids in the 2020s [PRESENTATION]

Here's the latest talk I put together, recently tried out on some willing victims at Quirk Joburg's Education Fridays. It's obviously inspired by the birth of the little sproglet - but there are some strong, sometimes dark themes that these little ones are going to force us to look at. Taking a peak at the future of digital culture through the eyes of those who are going to live it, can only make for some entertaining thinking.

This is probably the first presentation where I've focussed more on where this is all going as opposed to what we (business and consumers) currently have to deal with. Here are the 7 main strategic themes and issues that get discussed:

Everyone is fighting for your digital attention...

Saw an interesting set of graphics while browsing a presentation from the Fallon Group on digital strategy. It's quite a powerful piece of Powerpoint slide design, simply grouping a collection of digital call to actions together across web, mobile and social platforms. These are the bright lights vying for your attention.

I for one am feeling a little drowned - which brings us all the way back to social recommendation. Isn't it funny... In the middle ages, if you wanted to know where the best wild boar roast was going down, you'd ask a fellow peasant. In 2010, we're being so crowded out by marketing messages that we resort to the same behaviour. We just have more "friends" than before.

Visualising Foursquare. Scary. Cool.

I can fairly safely assume that I've lost my marbles by writing this post - but hey, one doesn't get to truly understand a space without diving in head first. That said, I stumbled across some interesting uses of the FourSquare API today (an API is basically a way of giving someone else permission to use your Foursquare data in other applications, visualisations or tools).

This one is called WeePlaces (click here to see my map or scroll down for the embed). It visualises your Foursquare Check Ins (all the interesting and uninteresting places you've been to over the past couple of months) in a moving timeline.

I really don't know what this means from a business point of view - but it's both cool and extremely scary. While you can't pinpoint where I live, you can definitely figure out the general area. And I'm sure deeper analysis of the time of these check ins will let you predict where I'm going to be at certain times. Humans are victims of routine afte…

The new web. Figuring it all out...

It's the question on everyone's lips these days, as the social web becomes a part of our daily lives, and through it's mechanics we become exposed to more and more rubbish content. I foresee something akin to Faith Popcorn's "Cocooning" trend happening all over again, just in a digital manner. Given too much choice, consumers tend to shut down and rely on tried and trusted channels and gatekeepers.

But then I turn my mind to two of my favourite metaphors.

The first, from Max Kaizen (Hunter of Genius). Not sure if this is original or creative-commons, Max will surely tell you: Culture precedes Commerce. There's a reason we haven't quite figured this new space out - we're waiting for culture to catch up. We're waiting for it to "embed", to use a horrid consulting term. Commerce will come.

Nokia N8 Review - Quick hits

I so badly wanted to like this phone. In my world, Nokia just hasn't cracked it since the E71. That phone rocked my world. Nothing has since, and it seems that until Symbian has been rudely shoved aside, this situation will remain.

Here's a quick hit summary of the Nokia N8, with my fairly simple recommendation. Although the price is good, there are no BUY signs.

NEGATIVES: Battery life is pathetic, in one case it ran out overnight. ANC Youth League to shut down Twitter...

I know we shouldn't laugh at ignorance. But hell's teeth chaps, if you're going to put out a press release, make sure you can back up your militant action. This is just crazy. Amusing crazy.

The ANC Youth League is concerned by the continuous creation of fake Twitter accounts in the name of ANC Youth League President Julius Malema. There are computer hackers who have created twitter accounts in the name of the President and recurrently posting misleading messages.

The ANC YL has in more than one occasion reported these impersonators and hackers, yet no action has been taken against them by the twitter administrators. We will now approach the relevant authorities to report these hackers and call for the closer of twitter if its administrator…
