Jump Shopping's Top 20 South African eCommerce Websites

Interesting list off a PR release that found my InBox. According to Jump Shopping (it's a bit odd for an eCommerce site to be judging eCommerce awards, but they have been doing it for a while and do seem to recuse themselves), the following are SA's top 20 (whittled down from a list of 40) eCommerce websites:

  • Bid or Buy
  • Calora
  • Cars.co.za
  • Greenlove
  • Groupon My City Deal
  • Kalahari.com
  • kulula.com
  • Leisure Books
  • Look and Listen
  • Loot.co.za
  • NuMetro
  • Private Property
  • Prophecy.co.za
  • SafariNow.com
  • Simplicity Online
  • Takealot
  • Travel Ground
  • UbuntuDeal
  • Wicount
  • Yuppiechef

Of course, group buying had to have made their way into our eCommerce lives, such has been the public's fascination with cheap prices on things you mostly don't need. Perhaps Ster Kinekor is an omission here? Perhaps they didn't enter.

Otherwise good to see our eCommerce sector growing. In my mind, this is ALL about UX - and we need as much competition, learning and morale boosting as possible. We're a little behind the curve.

My favourite story, if you haven't read it yet, of how important UX (user experience) can be is the $300 million button.

About the process:
The evaluations covered Design, Standards & Ease of use, Mobile, Social Networking and Public Voting. Jump Shopping outsourced the Design (Look and Feel) Evaluations to an independent design company. Jump Shopping will be ordering from the Top 20 websites under pseudo names to evaluate the ordering process and customer service. The evaluations conducted in Round 2 and 3 will determine the winners in the 2011 South African E-Commerce Awards.

About the awards:
The 2011 South African E-Commerce Awards is run by Jump Shopping, who identified the opportunity for such an awards event in 2006, and took the opportunity to start this as part of their goal to uplift E-Commerce in South Africa. The awards are now in its sixth year. These awards have been designed to recognise and reward those companies and organisations that have demonstrated excellence through the use of the Internet, with specific emphasis on E-Commerce. The Awards are open to South African E-Commerce websites based in South Africa.
